Claire Marshall - Piano Teacher and Examiner for The Royal Conservatory Music Certificate Program7/17/2019 Canadian-born Claire Marshall combines her backgrounds in psychology and music in her teaching and adjudicating. Educated at McGill University in Montreal, and the Gesell Institute of Child Development in New Haven, Connecticut, she has been fortunate to continue piano with several fine teachers in the state of Washington. She claims the two most potent influences in her professional development have been thirteen years of study with Jeffrey Gilliam at Western Washington University, and her training and experience as an examiner for The Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada. Her most interesting tangent was creating “Scale Studies” for the Seattle Aquarium, a summer arts program which combined the study of music and marine biology. Her article describing this project was published in “The American Music Teacher”magazine. Regarding her teaching philosophy Claire comments: “There is no doubt that a well-balanced and structured musical education has a positive influence on the young developing brain – technique at the instrument improves physical coordination, theory and memorization cultivate cognitive growth, aural skills are heightened, and the heart finds a more strong voice as self-expression is encouraged in performance. In addition, Claire feels that in the pursuit of mastery one tiny step at a time, the teacher has the privilege of nourishing the student’s sense of self-worth and empowerment. This sense of well-being and accomplishment is not suddenly arrived at one day – it is rather an accretion of small, but nonetheless, joyful moments of arrival and “ I can do it” at the piano.”
